World Cup 2014: Quarter Finals! France vs Germany!

What a lead up to this game.

Originally I was thinking maybe World War 2 -esque drinks, but that seemed a tad off (for now – maybe for D day). So, went with breakfast items again since these games are early, and well, that German Apple Strudel the other day got me thinking.

Also, this game falls on America’s Birthday – the 4th of July! So, I had some fun here and combined the two together and out pops two of my favorite things to eat for breakfast: Cold Apple Pie and French Toast!

For the German side, keeping with the Strudel theme, took it back a step and brought in some German liquor – and yes, you guessed it! Jagermeister is featured!

Cold Apple Pie:

  • 1oz Jagermeister
  • 1oz Cherry Liqueur (Heering or other such)
  • 1oz Shonnauer Apfel Liqueur (or other Apple Schnapps)

Shake all with ice and strain into ice filled rocks glass.

Welcome to my world of debating whether to eat the actual item or drink the cocktail of the item. Such hard choices. Actually, I guess you could have your pie and drink it too – why not? Drink is good, and, it is going to be a lot of work to collect all these recipes together.

For the lucky French, who are still in it, I went with an AMERICAN classic – French Toast. And of course used French based items here as well.

French Toast:

  • 1/2oz Cinnamon Schnapps
  • 1/2oz Cognac
  • 1/2oz Creme de Cassis
  • 1/2oz Simple Syrup
  • 1/4oz Vanilla Extract
  • dash of cinnamon
  • French pressed coffee w/cream (cold)
  • 1/2oz French Vodka (optional)

Shake all ingredients except coffee with ice and strain into ice filled rocks glass. Top with Coffee to taste. In this instance, some people will want a stronger drink, and you can do just that without changing the flavor with some high end French Vodka aka GREY GOOSE! Yes, been waiting awhile to drop Grey Goose into any cocktail, and being french derived of course, just had to do it here. This cocktail lends itself well to literally drinking for breakfast, and, combined with drinking the Cold Apple Pie, should get you pretty hardy and ready for the day.

Winner winner on the breakfast swinger?

Das Germans – plain and simple. I like Cold Apple Pie more than French Toast if both are available. Plus, who doesn’t like Jager (especially when it is buried inside a cocktail and adds flavor more than adding itself).

Happy Birthday America, and heck yes to World Cup.
